Obituary

Rowan Gene Newell, infant son of Sidney Noel and Colton Gene Newell, passed away peacefully at home in his loving parent’s arms on April 14, 2026.

Born on September 16, 2025, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, Rowan was a precious light whose life, though far too brief, touched so many hearts. In his six short months, he brought immeasurable joy, love, and warmth to all who knew him.

Rowan had a big personality and a smile that could light up any room. He was always happy and never met a stranger. He was ticklish all over, never stopped moving, and loved to watch dancing fruit on TV. He especially loved lying with his mother, snuggled close. Rowan was such a bright light to so many and was loved so deeply by everyone around him.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving mother, Sidney Swain Newell, Father Colton Gene Newell; maternal grandparents, Susan Anderson (David), and Grandfather Todd Swain; paternal grandparents, Sheena Davis (Tim) and Grandfather Joe Newell (Angie); along with many “aunties” including Carlee, Hannah, Cheyenne, Katie, and Sydney; his Big Cousin, Chase; uncles Jesse and Tanner; and many other family members and loved ones who will forever hold him close in their hearts.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday April 18, 2026, at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Canton Chapel with Pastor Heath Davis officiating.

The family invites all service attendees to wear something Blue in honor of Rowan's favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cardiac ICU at Levine Children’s Hospital.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Levine Children’s Hospital and Champ Clinic for all of their love and support, and to his special nurse, Liz, whom he loved and adored, for all the love and care shown to Rowan.

Psalm 73:26 (NIV): My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

The family of Rowan Gene Newell has entrusted Wells Funeral Home of Canton with his care, and we are deeply honored to serve them during this time.
