(Ret.) Colonel Ronald C. Becker, a man of distinction and honor, passed away on July 19, 2023, at CarePartners Solace Center.  Born on December 30, 1936, in Laureldale, Pennsylvania, he leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ronald's education journey began after his high school graduation when he enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia.  There he pursued his passion for knowledge and earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.  Ron went on to further his education at Northeastern University in Boston where he obtained a Master’s degree in Education.

In 1958, Ron's dedication to serving his country led him to be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry through ROTC upon graduating from Temple University.  His military journey encompassed various accomplishments and educational milestones.  He furthered his military education by obtaining degrees from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ron served with distinction in numerous locations around the world.  He selflessly dedicated his time and efforts to serve in Korea in 1961 and 1962, Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, as well as again between 1969 and 1970.  Additionally, Ron's service took him to Berlin, Germany from 1977 to 1980.  After retiring from the military at Fort Benning, GA. In 1984, he moved to Thomasville, GA., and served there as City Manager for eight years.


His military service was characterized by unwavering commitment and sacrifice.  With pride and dedication, he embraced his role and responsibilities as an officer.  Throughout his career, Colonel Becker embodied the virtues of courage and leadership that earned him the respect of his subordinates and superiors alike.  Ron's exceptional contributions did not go unnoticed, as he was adorned with numerous military awards and decorations.  Among his many accolades were Parachutist Wings, Ranger Tab, Pathfinder Badge, Aircraft Crewman’s Wings, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and The General Staff Identification Badge. Furthermore, his mantle boasted two Legion of Merit Awards, two Bronze Star Awards, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with a "V" Device, as well as the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Vietnam and Korean Service Medals.

Beyond his military endeavors, Ron held a deep appreciation for Masonic traditions as a York Rite Master Mason.  This proud member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville was also an avid golfer and sports car enthusiast.


Ronald's strong spirit was complemented by the love he harbored for his family.  He is preceded in death by his dedicated and loving wife of 54 years, Vanessa Jean Abel Becker, who stood beside him throughout their journey together.  Ronald held cherished memories of her close to his heart until the end.  He was also preceded in death by his father, Charles Becker and mother, Verna O. Rothenberger Becker.  Left with fond memories are his son, Eric Becker; daughter-in-law, Cherie; and his grandson, Ian Becker.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home.  Burial with military rites will follow at Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
