Canton-Roger Lee Sutton, 68, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at his residence.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, and the son of the late Robert Lee Sutton who passed away in 2012. Roger worked for Champion International, Blue Ridge Paper, and retired from Evergreen Packaging as a truck driver for 37 years. He was a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT). He was also a member of the Asphalt Gladiators car club; collecting antiques and guns was a hobby he enjoyed. Roger played softball until he was almost 60 and, on many occasions, could be seen walking around town with his grandchildren. He was an Eagle Scout with Troop #316 and a United States Army veteran. Roger enjoyed delivering Champion Christmas Boxes each year and was a member of Canton First Baptist Church.
Roger is survived by his mother Carolyn Yates Sutton; daughter, Yancey Sutton, and Cody McFarland, of Burnsville, NC; sister, Phyllis S. Wheeler, and Steve Hipps, of Waynesville; brother, Ricky Sutton, of Canton; two grandchildren, Knox and Nash; and girlfriend, Sharon Mintz, along with many friends and fellow car enthusiasts.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend David Green and the Reverend Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial will follow at Plains United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service.
