Roger "Burl" Sutton

Waynesville, Roger Burl Sutton, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Mission Hospital.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Ola Sutton.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donnie Sutton.   Burl retired from Haywood County School System as a small engine mechanic.  After retirement he did small engine repairs for the community.  Burl played the banjo with a bluegrass band at area nursing homes.  He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, fishing, most of all he enjoyed the time that he spent with his grandchildren.  A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.  Proverbs 18:24.

Burl is survived by his wife of 49 ½ years, Linda Sutton; three children, Jamie (Tiffany) Sutton, Wade (Krissy) Sutton and Ellie (Nathan) Franklin; sister, Kathy Sutton; brothers, Lonnie (Carlene) Sutton and Doyle Sutton; 12 grandchildren, Leah, Mackensey, Madilynn, Ruth, Pierson, Wade, Treyse, Jonlyn, Ford, Bellamy, Cade and Avery; 11 nieces and 9 nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Sutton Family Cemetery, on Pearson Ridge, off Sutton Town Road.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.  Serving as pallbearers will be Jamie Sutton, Doyle Sutton, Wade Sutton, Nathan Franklin, Dan Messer, Julius Messer, Lonnie Sutton and Mike Burgess.  Honorary Pallbearers will be William Earl Carver, Ted Norman, Richard Messer and Ed Davis.

The care of Mr. Sutton has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
