Robert W. Cunningham, 69, of Waynesville, passed away on June 26, 2025. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine Reese Cunningham, and his brother Ronnie Cunningham.
For over 30 years, Robert served the Haywood County School system as a custodian, where his commitment to providing a clean and welcoming environment for students and staff was unmatched. He began his career at the old Hazelwood Elementary School and proudly retired at the new Hazelwood Elementary School, symbolizing a significant chapter in both his life and the life of the community he cherished.
An avid sports fan, Robert carried a passion for the Dallas Cowboys, wore his affiliation with the Atlanta Braves proudly, and thoroughly enjoyed the thrill of Carolina Basketball. His enthusiasm for these teams was infectious, inspiring lively discussions and spirited debates among friends and family.
He is survived by his beloved brother, Thomas Cunningham; a niece, Mistie Cunningham; nephew, Richie Cunningham; a sister-in-law, Revonda Cunningham; aunt, Betty Anne Birchfield; and numerous cousins who will hold him dear in their hearts.
Robert was known for his deep love and enjoyment of family, spending cherished moments particularly with his brother, which he valued above all else. He found joy in sharing laughter and memories, reinforcing the bonds that define family.
A private burial will be held as per Robert's wishes.
As we remember Robert, let us honor the life he led with dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit. He will be greatly missed yet forever remembered in the hearts of many.
The care of Mr. Cunningham has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
