Robbie Smith Hargrove

Robbie Smith Hargrove passed away on Sunday, May 21^st. Robbie Lee was born in Wake County on August 20^th, 1929, to Edwin & Hattie Coward Smith. Robbie grew up in Madison County and graduated from Spring Creek High School in 1948. Robbie moved to Waynesville North Carolina and worked as a server at The Waynesville Country club while attending Western Carolina University. Robbie graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business and a minor in English from WCU.

Robbie was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin & Hattie Smith, her son, Charles David,” Chuck “Hargrove, two brothers, Edwin Smith and William Smith and a sister, Mary Elisabeth Davis. Special recognition to the deceased sisters-in-law who always helped Robbie through the years, Dortha Smith, and Bonnie Smith Buchanan.

Robbie is survived by a daughter, Vicki Hargrove Brunnick, (Peter), of Charlotte, grandson, Mason Peter Brunnick, (Leslie) of Acton, Massachusetts, son, Douglas Alan Hargrove of Hendersonville, and four grandchildren, Will, Sam, Taft and Sarah Hargrove. Robbie also was a devoted Aunt to many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews whom she adored.

Robbie taught for 35 years for Haywood County schools, including both Pisgah and Tuscola High schools. Robbie loved her students and many of them stayed connected with her over the years. Robbie had a special friend with whom she taught at Tuscola, Mr. Charles, “Chuck” Patterson. Mr. Patterson visited Robbie every day for over 25 years. He picked up her Waynesville Mountaineer at each visit and then they would go out to eat, talk and laugh for hours!

Robbie also enjoyed playing bridge with her women friends. In particular, she was a member of The Sunshine Bridge club for over 50 years! Robbie was a member of Providence Church.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastor Edward Brouwer officiating.  Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time at the funeral home.
