Rebecca Howell Prevost, 84, of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center in Asheville, NC, died of heart failure on November 30, 2025.
Becky was a beloved and nurturing wife, mother and friend who was known as a loving caretaker and consummate entertainer.
She was born in Newport News, VA, on April 26, 1941, to the late Matt Denmark Howell and the late Edith Morgan Howell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Ruth Robeson Kirkpatrick Howell; her husband, Dr. William Sidney Prevost, Jr. and her brothers, Dr. Thomas Edward Howell and John Cullen Howell, and her great-nephew, Riley Carl Howell.
Becky grew up mainly in Winston-Salem, NC, graduating from the Women’s College of UNC at Greensboro with a degree in Primary Education. She taught two years in Cape May, NJ, while Bill served in the U.S. Coast Guard. She later taught at Hazelwood Elementary School. She served on several local boards: Reach of Haywood County and the Foundation Board of Haywood Community College. Becky was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains where she taught Sunday School, was on Altar Guild, and she assisted on the committee to renovate the church and the rectory. She also served on the committee for the Western Diocese of the Episcopal Church to purchase Lake Logan, now the Lake Logan Episcopal Center.
Becky worked with her husband, Bill, on the development and sales of 10 Country Club Townhomes in Waynesville.
After Bill’s death, Becky moved to Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center in Asheville, where she enjoyed bringing friends together and serving the community.
Becky is survived by her two sons, William Sidney Prevost III (Vanessa) of Los Angeles, CA and Thomas Ruffin Prevost of Cody, WY; one sister, Susan Howell Gallion of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two stepbrothers, James Weaver Kirkpatrick, Jr. (Brenda) of Waynesville, NC, and John Robeson Kirkpatrick (Beverly) of Candler, NC, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. at Grace Church in the Mountains. Memorials may be made to Grace Church in the Mountains, Waynesville, NC; Lake Logan Episcopal Center; and St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield.
