Porter Addison Broyles, age 87, of 51 Broyles Drive, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Buncombe County and was the son of the late Ernest and Arie Scroggs Broyles. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gwyn Broyles. Porter was a retired Air Force Lt. Col who flew 53 missions during World War II. He was formerly employed by Champion Paper as a shift foreman and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a Mason and member of the Pigeon River Masonic Lodge #386 AF & AM and was a member of the Tri-County Oasis Shrine Club. In 2006, he was inducted into the Shriners Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna Rhodarmer Broyles; two daughters, Martha Broyles and Margaret Broyles, both of Canton; a sister, Juanita Medford and her husband, Jack, of Clyde and a grandson, Nathan Robinson and his wife, Kathy, of Clyde. Masonic and military graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road, with the Reverend Mike Austin officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Pallbearers will be Joe Rhodarmer, Frank Rhodarmer, Charlie Rhodarmer, Joseph Kinsland, Sid Penland and Eugene Yates. The Pigeon River Masonic Lodge #386 AF & AM will open its doors for members at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2007.
