Phoebe Ann 'Peggy' Smith

Peggy Ann Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, peacefully passed away on October 10, 2023 at Mission Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family as she embarked on her final journey.

Born on February 23, 1930 in Coalwood, WV, Peggy was the daughter of Reuben Peake and Pearl Bellamy Peake. She grew up in a warm and nurturing environment alongside her three sisters: Virginia Browning, Marie Duncan, and Jackie Horton; as well as her brother, Richard Peake. Family played an integral role in Peggy's life, shaping her values of love, kindness, and loyalty.

Peggy's passion for her work led her to pursue a career as a legal secretary. For an impressive 28 years, she dedicated herself to serving others with dedication and professionalism. Over the course of her career, Peggy had the privilege of working with Mountain Mediation Service - a role she cherished deeply. Her commitment to justice and fairness left an indelible mark on all those who had the pleasure of working alongside her.

After nearly three decades of service, Peggy retired in 1998. However, retirement did not signal a slowing down for this extraordinary woman. Instead, it provided an opportunity for Peggy to focus on the joys of family and indulge in her hobbies and interests. Above all else, Peggy loved her granddaughter dearly and found immeasurable joy in spending time with her.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023 at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home where friends and loved ones will gather to honor Peggy’s memory. A private inurnment will be held at Green Hill Columbarium for friends and family.

Peggy leaves behind an adoring family who will forever be touched by her presence. She was the beloved wife of Stanley Wayne Smith, with whom she shared a memorable 75 years of marriage. Their bond was an example of enduring love and partnership. Peggy's love and guidance will always be cherished by her daughters, Vicki O'Mara (Patrick) and Terri Goldich.

At the center of Peggy's universe was her granddaughter, Rose Goldich, whose presence brought boundless joy and happiness to Peggy's life. Rose, together with her fiancé Ford Hayes, will continue to honor Peggy's legacy by carrying on her spirit of love and strength. Peggy also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who admired her deeply and were grateful to have had such a remarkable aunt in their lives. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support will be sorely missed.

The care of Mrs. Smith has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
