Canton – Peggy Ann Watson Burnette, 82, passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at Care Partners Solace Center in Asheville.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, Peggy was the daughter of the late George and Ann Watson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, John Scott Burnette in 2011.
She was a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church for most of her life and more recently joined Bethel Baptist Church.
Peggy treasured children and spent much of her life caring for them. She loved being a mom and was over-the-moon when she found out she was going to be a grandmother. She worked in the church nursery at Dutch Cove for many years and enjoyed babysitting for many families in the Dutch Cove area. As a lunch lady with Haywood County Schools for over 30 years, first at Morning Star Elementary, then Meadow Brook Elementary and Pisgah High School, “Ms. Peggy” touched many lives. She loved connecting with the kids at each school and encouraging them.
She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, J.C. Burnette of Canton; her daughter, Kim Cunningham (Kevin); two sisters, Debra Grady (Patrick) and Kathy Cagle; daughter-in-law, Marni; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Burnette, Kortney Clark and Dylan Cunningham and four great-grandsons, Eathan, Eli, John William and Jeremiah.
A private graveside service will be held.
The family is very grateful to CarePartners Hospice for their wonderful care of Peggy and support of J.C., with special thanks to Deanna and Maureen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morning Star Cemetery Fund, PO Box 1746, Canton, NC 28716.
