Obituary

Paul Douglas Jones, 70, passed away peacefully from Parkinson’s disease on March 20, 2026, in the family home he designed and built in Lake Junaluska, NC. His diagnosis was in 2013, and he lived his remaining years with courage, dignity, and humor.

Born in Black Mountain, NC on March 28, 1955, Paul graduated from Charles D. Owen High School and UNC Charlotte with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Management. Upon graduation he had careers in the pulp and paper manufacturing management in Canton, NC, Virginia, and Georgia. Paul then was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of building, real estate development, and project management in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

He enjoyed building, playing golf, gardening, traveling, watching Carolina Tar Heel basketball, volunteering with numerous charities. Most of all Paul enjoyed sitting on the porch at “Lake J” with family and friends. Paul was a devout follower of Jesus Christ, enjoying Bible studies with his friends Dennis and Pastor Dan from Calvary Road Baptist Church, where he and Sara are members.

Paul is survived by his adored and devoted wife, Sara; his children, Brian Jones

(Alexandra), Julie Funderud (Steven), Sarah Jones (Brad), Wes Limbo (Kari), and Stacey Janney (Matt); grandchildren, Keri, Brooks, Ella, Kali, Jackson, Steven, Jake, Emma, Baylor, Marigold, Clifford and Joanna and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Paul’s sister, Martha Baldwin (Mike), and sister-in-law, Kathryn Jones.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Arnold and Laverne Jones, two brothers, Jim and Tom, and grandchild, Elijah.

The family would like to thank friends, Dennis and Shirley Downey, Pastor Dan Benham, Bob and Meridee Anderson, Christine Whitworth, cousin, Llewellyn Ostergard, Tom and Connie Raby, and friends in Osprey Cove in St Mary’s, GA for their special care and prayers for both Paul and Sara. To all the caregivers and friends from Skyland Terrace, Hospice of Haywood County, and Givens Estates. A special thank you for your skill and compassion for Paul.

There will be a private memorial service of love and remembrance for the family.

The family invites you to a celebration on July 4, 2026, between the hours of 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM at the family home on the porch at 2177 S. Lakeshore Drive, Lake Junaluska, to celebrate and remember Paul’s life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Hospice, 13 Haywood Office Park, Suite 107, Waynesville, NC 28785 or The The Parkinson's Foundation, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163.
