Mildred Long Burris, age 86, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center in Asheville. A native of Haywood County and a prior resident of Macon, GA, she was the daughter of the late Fred Lee and Ellen Henson Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. In 1940, she made the winning shot from half-court with five seconds left in the game to give Bethel High School their first state championship in women's basketball. She is survived by a son, Charles L. Burris, Jr., and his wife, Sandra, of Canton; two sisters, Hazel Morgan and Maxine Smathers and her husband, Webb M., all of Canton; three grandchildren, Bobby Burris, Jr., Fred Burris and his wife, Debra, and Charles L Burris, III and Jeanette Trull; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastor James Parham officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
