Waynesville, Mike Hill, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 with the love of his life, Pam, at home where he wanted to be.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Robert and Shirley Ensley Hill. Mike served his country as a Sergeant in the Air Force. After his time in the military, he retired with 40 years of service with Southern Concrete Materials and 30 years with Waynesville Fire Department. Mike was a long time Captain with the Haywood County Rescue Squad and spearheaded the swift water rescue team in Haywood County, and was proud of the accomplishments that team is today. He was a member of the Waynesville Fire Department. Mike was a tireless servant for his community, putting the wellbeing of others before himself countless times in his life. In his downtime, there were fewer things Mike enjoyed more than fishing and tending to his yard. He was also known to be quite the housekeeper, never missing a chance to vacuum. As Mike’s health began to deteriorate these past few years, there was one constant in his life, his Lord and Savior. Mike found solace in his church family at Dellwood Baptist Church. Whether it was mowing the lawn, feeding the Wednesday night youth, or sweeping the Fellowship Hall, Mike had the heart of a servant. The one verse that lifted his spirits in times of hardship was Psalm 61:2, "When my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
Mike is survived by his wife and soulmate of 44 years, Pamela Hill, of Waynesville; one son, Wesley Hill; one sister, Beth Goodson, and her husband, Ray, of Canton; three brothers, Gary Hill, and his wife, Debbie, of Clyde, Danny Hill and David Hill, both of Waynesville; Karen Caldwell, caretaker and dear friend; and his beloved dog, Jubel, a darling chiweenie.
A celebration of Mike’s life will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, this significant day holding a special place in his heart, at Dellwood Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the sanctuary. The Waynesville Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dellwood Baptist Church, Youth Ministry, 115 Hall Drive, Waynesville, NC 28785.
