Memphis Paxton, Jr.

Memphis "Edgar" Paxton, Jr., age 86, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Memphis Paxton, Sr. and Ianthia Pharr Paxton. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Paxton; four brothers; and four sisters. He retired from Champion International in 1984 with 39 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Edgar enjoyed socializing with friends and camping at Lake Chatuge. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a United States Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nellie Hyde Paxton; a son, Randy Paxton and his wife, Christie, of Canton; a daughter, Nanette Rimmer and her husband, David, of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Kim Howington, Robert and Amy Sheppard, and Katie Paxton; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2008, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Thomas Kemp officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
