Melvin (Mel) H. Cagle, 64, passed away on Sunday, September 21 at HCA Hospital in Asheville, after an extended illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Tena Boles Cagle, to whom he was married for almost 35 years.
As a young boy, Mel loved to sing. He especially enjoyed harmonizing and Southern Gospel music as well as old traditional hymns. His favorite song was “How Great Thou Art.” In high school Mel was a record-holding long-distance runner. After high school he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he earned the rank of Lance Corporal and received his Marksmanship Rifle Badge.
Melvin worked many years for Cagle Construction Company as a heavy equipment operator. He and Tena then started their own business, AAA Windows and Siding, Inc. He assisted in M&H Discount, the family business.
Mel was a jokester — he loved to make people laugh. He loved animals, especially his pets, and enjoyed fishing and golf. He also liked to design and build things from reclaimed and recycled materials.
Melvin is also survived by daughter Keisha Pendry (Billy Campbell), 3 granddaughters, Haley, Chloe and Cody Stillwell, and one great granddaughter, Layla Vaughan. He also has four special cousins — Janet Meadows, Bill Meadows, Gary Meadows, and Scott Meadows.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Porter Cagle Jr. and Hester Rosetta Rathbone Cagle, his brother, Daniel Lee Cagle, and his sister, Joyce Cagle Glenn.
