Sylva, May Mintz Mathis, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 21, 2021.

May was a native of Haywood County and lived in Jackson County for the past several years.  She a daughter of the late John Henry and Violet Reece Mintz.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Mathis; great-grandson, Easton Cagle; two sisters, Florence Hannah and Evelyn Hampton; four brothers, Lawrence (Betty), Elmer (Dorothy), Don and Roy Mintz.  She was a loving and devoted Mama and Mamaw.  May loved spending time with her family and cooking.  She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

May is survived by three children, Carol Cagle (Noel), of Sylva, Ricky Mathis (Mary), of Waynesville; and Patsy Gunter (Jeff), of Sylva; four brothers, Dewey, Gene and Oscar Mintz, of Waynesville and Boyd Mintz, of Hot Springs; four sisters-in-law, Jean, Barbara, Sally Mintz and Pauline Mathis; eight grandchildren, Jason Cagle (Heather), Holly Keffer (JJ), Justin Cagle (Megan), Zac Cagle (Breana), Colby and Steven McFalls, Kayden Conner and Cora Cox; nine great-grandchildren, Gunner, Hunner, Owen, Koraline, Eli, Evie, Talen and Genevia; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Roger Stewman officiating.  Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.  Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Cagle, Zac Cagle, JJ Keffer, Jody Conner, Arthur Conner and Jamie Conner.

The family would like to express a huge Thank You to all the staff of Morningstar Assisted Living and Harris Regional Hospice for the outstanding care they gave to our Mother in the past couple of weeks.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Youth Fund, 89 Mount Pleasant Church Road, Sylva, NC 28779.

The care of Mrs. Mathis has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
