Mattie Smith

Mattie Elizabeth Sheppard Smith, age 90, a long-time resident of Canton, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at the Alzheimer's and Memory Care unit of the Hermitage in Sylva, NC. She was born on June 7, 1924 to the late Wayne and Elizabeth Davis Sheppard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Alfred C. Smith and by three brothers and a sister. Mattie is survived by a daughter, Sharon Katz and her husband, Ron, of Asheville; two granddaughters, Allison Arpin of Raleigh and Sarah Arpin and her husband, Kevin Jones, of the Chicago area; one great-grandson, Austin Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Christy Sharp officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to WNC Four Seasons Hospice, 171 Hospital Drive, Highlands, NC 28741 or to the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, 50 S. French Broad, Asheville, NC 28801.
