Canton -Mary Elizabeth Wyatt, 95, of Canton passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at her residence.  A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Parley Porter and Essie Mason Cogburn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nobel J Wyatt in 2005; sisters, Martha C. Kuykendall, Betty C. Cooke, Parlene “Shang” Cogburn and Johnnie Kinsland and grandsons, Michael Wayne Jones and Jeremy Davis.

Mary was a graduate of Bethel High School.  In 1944, she was voted the best basketball player in Western North Carolina.  She retired from American Enka and following her retirement, she was employed by Spring Dale Country Club. She loved cooking, canning gardening and beautiful flowers.  She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Sheila W. Jones and her husband, Herman of Newport News, VA and Vickie Queen and her husband, Tommy of Canton; three grandchildren, Teresa L. Finlay and her husband, James, Christopher R. Jones and Keever Davis; seven great-grandchildren, Cora Singleton, Sydney Davis, Lele Davis, Cassie Davis, Chloe Finlay, Olivia Finlay and Noah Jones; one great-great-grandson, Easton Gray Johnson and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Riverside Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Frazier officiating.  Interment will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The care of Mrs. Wyatt has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
