Mary Louise Smith

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Louise Smith (“Lou"), a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and treasured friend. Mary left us on May 19, 2024, at the age of 86, but her spirit and the love she shared with those around her will live on forever.

Born on September 4, 1937, to Mae and Richard Knapp of Asheville, NC, Mary was a beacon of light and warmth in the lives of many. She worked at American Enka Company in her younger years and later enjoyed interacting with customers at Island Grocery on Folly Beach, SC where she made lasting friendships. She loved skating, water skiing, cooking, bird-watching, dancing, and nature. Her caring disposition was evident to all who knew her. She dedicated her life to her family, always placing their needs above her own and providing a nurturing and loving environment.

Mary was not only a matriarch but also a safe haven for anyone in need of advice or support. Her door was always open, and her wise and witty counsel helped guide countless family members and friends through life's challenges. Her sense of humor and quick wit brought joy and laughter, creating memories that will be cherished forever.

Her love for animals was a testament to her compassionate heart. Mary often took in stray or injured animals, providing them with a loving home and the care they needed. Her home was a sanctuary not just for animals, but for anyone seeking comfort and understanding.

Mary is preceded in death by two daughters, Teresa Woods and Karen Tipton, granddaughter Rachel Bey, mother Mae Knapp, father Richard Knapp, two sisters, and three brothers.

Mary leaves behind her beloved children, Amy Smith and Rebecca Ray, brother Tommy Knapp, sister Betty Buckner, and her adoring grandchildren, Marley McClellan, Blake Smith, Madison Harmon, Rita Hughes, Brandon Parker, Violet Ray, Erin Bartholomew, Jessica Woods, and one great-grandson, Xander Harmon, who will carry forward her legacy of love, kindness, and humor.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, May 24, 2024, in the Wells Chapel of Faith at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. With the Reverend Chris Willett officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time in the chapel.

Though she is no longer with us, Mary's spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as her love and wisdom remain in our hearts forever.

The care of Mrs. Smith has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler and an online memorial register is available at “obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
