Mary Hyde

Bethel, NC, Mary Annette "Ann" Sheffield Hyde, age 79, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A lifelong resident and native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Mary Sue Smathers Sheffield. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Hyde, who died in 2003. Ann was a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church and was a graduate of Bethel High School Class of 1957. She graduated from Western Carolina University receiving both a Bachelor of Science and a Master's Degree. Ann was a teacher with Canton City School System and with the consolidation of Pisgah High School. She was an Adjunct Professor at Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University for 38 years. Ann was a PK-12 education consultant in gifted and handicapped student through the state of NC Western Region.

Ann is survived by her twin sister, Margaret Jannette Orr, and her husband, George, of Palm Harbor, Florida; two nieces, Tamara O. Gryder and Robin Owens; and one cousin, Jimmy Smathers.

A celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 24, 2018 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Riley Covin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
