Mary Hamm

November 10, 1926 — September 29, 2018

Waynesville, Mary LaRue Britt Hamm, a resident at Givens Estates of Asheville, NC, died at age 91 on September 29, 2018.

Mary LaRue Britt was born on November 10, 1926 in Fairmont, NC as the first child of Louise Barnes and Henry Forest Britt, both now deceased. Late in the Great Depression, Mary LaRue's father died unexpectedly, and on September 8, 1935 at age eight, the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh became her home along with three younger siblings. She graduated from high school while living at the Orphanage and always remembered the years spent there as happy times. In 1946 Mary LaRue met and married Eugene Perry Hamm, Jr. of Raleigh. Their marriage lasted for 70 and a half years until Gene's death in 2016.

Mary LaRue will be remembered as a thoughtful and generous person who had a life-long relationship with Jesus. At Givens she enjoyed new friends and helped many on the seventh floor with various chores of daily living. She loved to be needed and to be able to respond.

Mary LaRue is survived by her son Rodney and his wife, Phyllis of Waynesville, NC and their three children: Tiffany Hall (Ken) and their children Webber and Virginia of Waynesville, NC; Andrew Trent Hamm and his sons Alex and Aiden of Asheville, NC; Leslie H. Mauldin (Doug) and their children Dane and Sarah of Louisburg, NC. Mary LaRue is also survived by her sister Joan Britt Bunn and brothers Austin H. Britt and William [Bill] Coleman Britt (Shirley). Mary LaRue was preceded in death by her son Gary.

A private Service of Remembrance will be conducted at a later time.

Memorials may be sent to the Methodist Home for Children, 1041 Washington Street, Raleigh, NC 27605.

The care of Mary has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes and an online memorial register is available at "Obituaries" at www.wellsfuneralhome.com
