Wells Funeral Home - Canton
1:00 - 3:00 pm (Eastern time)
Margaret "Maggie" Gatlin, 80, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Sidney Gatlin and Katherine Hopper Gatlin, as well as her brother-in-law, Robert McCracken. Margaret’s memory will be cherished and honored by those who survive her, each carrying forward the values, love, and gentle guidance she so generously gave.
Margaret was a proud graduate of Lee Edwards High School, where she forged lifelong friendships and developed the foundation for her strong work ethic. Her commitment to her work was evident throughout her career, which spanned over three decades at Square D as an Assembler. Margaret took great pride in her contributions there, earning the respect and admiration of her coworkers for her reliability and steady presence. Later in life, she brought her friendly nature and positive attitude to the Sunspree Resort Gift Shop and then to J&S Cafeteria in Enka Candler, working as a cashier and greeting each customer with a warm smile.
Beyond her professional life, Margaret found immense joy in simple pleasures. She was an avid reader and found solace and entertainment in the pages of countless books. Television was another source of enjoyment and relaxation for her, providing moments of comfort at the end of long days.
Margaret’s true passion, however, was her family. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Laura Smith and Sherry Dickerman, and her son, William David Mills, a sister, Judie McCracken, and a niece, Ronda Jenkins. Her legacy continues through her grandson, Aaron Dickerman, and her great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Aiden Casivant, who brought great joy and pride to her later years.
A Gathering of Family & Friends will be held to honor Margaret’s life on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Margaret are invited to remember her together, sharing memories and celebrating a life lived with grace and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 581 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or Alzheimers Associations, c/o Donor Services, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL, 60601.
Margaret Evelyn Gatlin will be deeply missed. The strength of her character, the depth of her care for others, and her unwavering dedication to her loved ones will remain an enduring inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known her.
The care of Ms. Gatlin has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
