Margaret Emrich

MARGARET W. EMRICH Lake Junaluska, Margaret Louise Weld Emrich, age 85, of 1465 S. Lakeshore Drive #B-2, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Long Island, New York, she was the daughter of the late Dana Porter and Elizabeth Linke Weld. Her parents met while teaching on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Her father's advanced studies in physical chemistry took the couple to New York and New Jersey where her father became Director of Research of Sacony Mobil Oil Company. Upon her father's death in 1936, her mother and sister, Dorothy moved to Nebraska to be near family. Margaret attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She met Richard C. Emrich at the university where after his graduation; he went into the US Army. They were married on August 1, 1943 and resided in Columbus, Georgia. His years of US Air Force and Reserves and federal employment began after the war. Margaret became a "government girl" while Richard was in the service. She was employed in the Washington, DC area for one of the emerging intelligence agencies we are just now learning about. Margaret and Richard made their homes in Arlington, Virginia and McLean, Virginia. Both Martha Louise Emrich-Stiles and Richard C. Emrich, Jr. were born in Virginia. Among Margaret's favorite experiences were the years she was the public affairs director and an on - air personality for ten years broadcasting on WCTN radio in Maryland. She interviewed people doing interesting things in the greater Washington area. Informative conversations were a natural for Margaret. She acquired a faithful audience. She published articles in various publications including The Washington Post. Five years ago, Margaret and Richard moved to Lake Junaluska, NC to be near their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They became active members of Longs Chapel United Methodist Church in Clyde, NC and were long-time members of Mount Olivet Methodist Church in Arlington, Virginia. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard C. Emrich, Sr.; one son, Richard C. Emrich, Jr. of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Marti Emrich-Stiles and her husband, Reverend Daniel Stiles, of Waynesville; one sister, Dorothy Weld Avis of Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Marissa G. Emrich, Lisa Kay Tygielski and her husband, Matthew, and Heather Michelle Jollay and husband, Dr. Martin Senecki; three great grandchildren, Noah Zenon Tygielski , Michael Ryan Tygielski and Phoebe Noelle Jollay-Castelblanco; three step grandchildren, Dana Lynn Sutton, Melissa Lorrianne Clark, and Benjamin Daniel Stiles; two step great grandchildren, Andrew and Torri Senecki; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 15, 2010 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles "Chuck" Wilson, II and Reverend Dr. Daniel Stiles. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 prior to the services at the church. Flowers are appreciated.
