Maggie Smith

Maggie Alice Messer Smith, age 87, died Wednesday, April 7, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Pink and Maude Hunter Messer. She was preceded in death by her husband, George V. Smith; a sister, Geneva West; and two brothers, Zemery and Roy Messer. Maggie was employed with Dayco Corporation for 31 years before retiring in 1984. She was a member of White Oak Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Maggie enjoyed cooking for her family and working in her garden. She is survived by a son, Thomas V. Smith and his wife, Pat, of Ohio; two daughters, Georgia S. Crain and Renee K. Shelton both of Waynesville; one sister, Nettie M. Mitchell and her husband, Roy, of Hampton, VA; one brother, Patton Messer and his wife, Donna, of Richmond, VA; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2009 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with Reverend Josh Cole officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.
