Waynesville, Lucy Dunbar Ledford James, 93, entered her heavenly home on Saturday, March 18, 2023, in Dandridge, Tennessee.
She was born in the White Oak community of Haywood County to the late Sam Milas and Margaret Rathbone Ledford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Silas James, who died in 2017; sisters, Ruth Jones, Georgia Ledford, Kathleen Derrick and Virginia Kelly; brothers, Paul, Rowe, Neil, Sikes, J.C., Earl and Frank Dee. She was the last surviving sibling of the 12.
Lucy attended Fines Creek High School. She worked 28 years with Wellco; 10 years with Brentwood Nursing Home, and 24 years with Mountain Projects Senior Companion Program. Lucy retired in 2019 and volunteered with the Haywood Auxiliary receiving numerous awards and accolades.
She loved maintaining her beautiful flower gardens, NASCAR racing and "Dental Strong".
Lucy is survived by a sister-in-law, Eva Mae Ledford, of Maggie Valley. Also left to cherish her memories are her nieces, Margaret Ann Jones, Joey McFarland, Carol Bolden, Denise Harris, Earlene, Karen and Sharon Ledford, Kathy Phillips, Dalene Parker, Patsy Mills, Diana Jones, Renea Bradshaw; and nephews, Charles Derrick, Larry, Steve, Jeff and Chris Ledford, and Doug and Mike Sherrill.
A funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Ferguson and Reverend Karen Lawrence officiating. A eulogy will be delivered by her nephew, Charles Derrick. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family is grateful to UT Medical Center Hospice for their care, kindness, love and concern for Lucy during the past two years.
