Lucille Elsie Buchanan Hannah passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Lakewood Senior Living in Boiling Springs, South Carolina.

Lucille was born on July 29, 1932, in Franklin, North Carolina, to her beloved parents, Guy and Clara Smith Buchanan. When Lucille was in the first grade, her family moved to Clyde, North Carolina, the community that would become home. It was there, while in junior high, that Lucille met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Hannah.

Her family lived across from Bon-A-Venture Cemetery in Clyde and the young couple often walked to the cemetery. Years later, when Dick purchased cemetery plots for the two of them at Bon-A-Venture, he told Lucille, “I figured we started here, so we could end here.” Lucille and Dick were married on July 2, 1950, in Greenville, South Carolina and celebrated 64 years of marriage just prior to Dick’s passing in 2014.

Lucille devoted herself to her family, her faith, and a career that would touch the lives of countless people for more than six decades. In the basement of the Hannah home, Lucille opened Town and Country Beauty Shop. What began as a beauty shop became something far greater. For 62 years, she styled hair, but the true gift Lucille offered could never be measured by the number of appointments on her books. Over the years, customers became friends, and many of those friends became family. Laughter was a constant. In 2018, she simply decided it was time to close the shop.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the love she had for her profession was the care she provided after some of her longtime customers passed away. Lucille would go to the funeral home and do their hair one final time. She considered it an enormous honor to care for the people who had trusted her for so many years. It was a quiet and deeply personal act of service that said everything about the woman Lucille was.

That same spirit defined Lucille’s Christian faith. Faith was not merely something she spoke about; it was something she lived. She taught Sunday School at Clyde First Baptist Church for 32 years and served for a time as a deaconess. If one wanted to understand what being a Christian meant to Lucille, they needed only to watch the way she treated others.

She was a devoted mother to Denise and welcomed Denise’s husband Hal with the same love and support. She told them that she had lived her life, and now it was their turn to live theirs. Hal has always remained deeply grateful for the love and encouragement Lucille gave them as they built a life of their own. She adored her grandson Casey and his wife Kate and found still more joy with the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Samantha “Sammie.”

In 2021, Lucille moved to Lakewood Senior Living in Boiling Springs, SC so she could be closer to her family. Not only did her family treasure their visits with Lucille, but in addition the caregivers and other residents who also grew to love her.

Lucille leaves behind far more than memories. She leaves behind the countless people who sat in her beauty-shop chair and left feeling a little better than when they arrived. She leaves generations of Sunday School students who learned about faith from a woman who practiced what she taught. She leaves lifelong friendships born over cups of coffee, Russian tea or iced tea, a family strengthened by her unwavering love, and an example of kindness and acceptance that will continue long after her passing.

And for those wondering how best to remember Lucille, perhaps the answer does not need to be complicated. Make time to go for a walk or sit and visit with an old friend. Welcome someone without judgment. Or, in true Lucille fashion, simply pick up a broom and sweep something.

Do it with a smile, and think of her. After all, Lucille spent a lifetime showing those around her that some of the greatest expressions of love are found in the simplest acts of service.

Left to mourn are Denise and husband Hal; Grandson Casey and wife Kate and new great-granddaughter Samantha “Sammie”; as well as several cherished nieces and nephews along with Bruce Buchanan’s second wife Elaine Buchanan Arnold and her respective family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Clara Buchanan; her husband, Dick Hannah; sister, Cleo Spencer Leatherwood; brother, Bruce Buchanan; and brother-in-law Charles Hannah along with their respective spouses.

There will be a private family service held at a later date.

The care of Mrs. Hannah has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
