Canton – Lonnie Maxwell Messer, 78, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Care Partners Hospice Solace Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Roy and Alma Harvey Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Pless, Carroll, Sherrill and Benny Messer and two sisters, Irene Mashburn and Velma Farmer. Lonnie was a former employee of American Enka, where he worked for 15 ½ years, Champion International and retired from Blue Ridge Paper Products in 2004. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper and took pride in growing a garden. Lonnie was a devoted family man and gave his all to them unselfishly.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Mathis Messer; one daughter, Vicki Messer Parker and husband, Tony, of Canton; one grandson, Brady Daniel Barrett and wife, Felicia, of Canton; three great-grandchildren, Sidney Elizabeth, Daniel Truman, and Mallory Nina Barrett all of Canton; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Center Pigeon Baptist Church with the Reverend Scott Poole officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
