Leonard Atkinson, Jr.

Leonard Atkinson, Jr., a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2023, at the CarePartners Solace Center. He was born on December 6, 1929, in Coosa County, Alabama. Leonard was known for his warm heart, kind spirit, and unwavering dedication to his family.

Throughout his life, Leonard treasured spending time with his loved ones, particularly his grandchildren. They brought immense joy and happiness into his world. His eyes would sparkle with delight as he shared stories and laughter with each of them. Leonard's love for his family knew no bounds.

As a young man, Leonard answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Era. He proudly represented his nation and demonstrated unwavering courage and commitment during his military service. Leonard's bravery will forever be remembered and honored.

In addition to his military service, Leonard had a passion for various hobbies. He found solace in fishing and cherished every moment spent outdoors. The tranquility of nature provided him the perfect escape from the demands of everyday life. Additionally, Leonard was an avid fan of wrestling. He would eagerly sit in front of the television cheering for his favorite wrestlers, captivated by their strength and determination.

At the age of 93, Leonard peacefully passed away surrounded by love and comfort. Although he has left this earthly realm, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Leonard is preceded in death by his father, Leonard Atkinson Sr., mother, Bessie Dobson; and his beloved wife, Ruth Neil Atkinson, who passed away in 1969; one son, Jimmy Atkinson; and seven siblings.

He is survived by three children: Teresa Franklin, Debbie Toineeta, and Leonard Earl Atkinson; as well as his sister, Sarah Pulcrano. Leonard also leaves behind several cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson, Sebastian Crowe. His memory will be carried on by numerous nieces and nephews who all remember him as a loving and caring uncle.

Leonard Atkinson, Jr.'s departure from this world has left a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will forever guide and inspire his family. He lived a life filled with love, laughter, and kindness. Though we mourn the loss of such a remarkable individual, let us also celebrate the incredible journey he embarked upon during his time on Earth. May his soul find eternal peace, knowing that he was deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

The care of Mr. Atkinson has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
