Lena Apple

April 30, 1907 — September 14, 2002

Maggie Valley-Lena Marie Apple, age 95, formerly of Perryton, Texas, died Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

She was born in Hutchinson, Kansas and lived most of her life in the Texas Panhandle. She had lived in Haywood County since 1994. She was the daughter of the late B. B. and Grace Kimble Kent, a pioneer family that participated in the Oklahoma Land Rush. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Vance Apple, who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, Lee and Don Apple.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Perryton, Texas and attended Long's Chapel United Methodist Church of Lake Junaluska. She graduated from High School in 1924 and from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas in 1929. She was a teacher in the 1930's and later was a homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Kara Bess Malaney and her husband Dempsey, of Maggie Valley; a son, Kent Apple and his wife, Valinda, of Lewisville, TX; and six grandchildren, Kristi, Kevin, and Candace Apple, Lisa, Lance and Bonnie Malaney; four nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home in Perryton, Texas at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, WNC Chapter, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806 or to one's favorite charity.

Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville is in charge of local arrangements.
