Waynesville, June Ellen Crowe, 96, passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Sacramento, California, she had previously resided in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, Florida before moving to Haywood County in 1991. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Armenthia Bell Chapman and was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hartley Crowe, who died in 1990.

June's family and friends will remember her for her love and spirit of volunteerism as she:
• Taught Sunday-School and was baptized at Hamilton Avenue Christian Church as a teenager in St. Louis, Missouri.
• Worked with "Grey Ladies" during WWII helping in hospitals.
• Raised seven children, plus helped bring and care for an Italian husband and wife and their two daughters from Hungary, letting them live in her home;
• Was a Girl Scout leader of 32 girls
• Volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Bank
• Worked as the Credit Manager for Sears, Parsons, Kansas
• Kept triple entry books for the Ford tractor business, Parsons, Kansas
• Was the administrator and half owner of a 42 bed Triple A nursing home, named Sunset Nursing Home in Kansas
• Volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels in Fort Myers, Florida
• Opened her own bath shop, J. Ellen's, recognized by the Ft. Myers News Press as being the best bath shop in southern Florida
• Taught Sunday-School in Maggie Valley
• Volunteered at Haywood County Christian Ministries
• Was a guardian ad litem for the protection of children through the court systems in Fort Myers and Waynesville.
• Vice president and later president of Misty Meadows Association.

June is survived by four daughters, Sandra Williams and Peggy Hickman, both of Waynesville, Dianna Robinson and her husband, Gary, of Fort Myers, and Debi Buchanan of Thomasville, Georgia; three sons, Leonard Nunnink, Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Belton, Missouri, Chris Nunnink of Waynesville and Mike Nunnink of Fort Myers; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Entombment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Open Door Ministries, 32 Commerce Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Haywood Christian Ministries, 150 Branner Avenue, Waynesville, NC 28786.
