John Mcgirt, Jr.

Waynesville

Waynesville, John Shaw McGirt, Jr., 90, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late, John Shaw McGirt, Sr. and Golda Cline McGirt.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Noland McGirt, who died in 2016; and a brother, Harris McGirt.  John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 during the Korean War.  John was a member of Crabtree United Methodist Church.  He received his associates degree at Mars Hill and his bachelor’s degree from UNC of Chapel Hill in Geography.  John retired in 1989 from the Department of Agriculture in the Arial Photography Division at Grade GS-11.  He enjoyed gardening; loved studying history, especially Civil War topics, and was a member of the Civil War round table in Haywood County.  He maintained an impressive library of Civil War and North Carolina History books.

John is survived by two sons, John "Jack" McGirt, III, of Waynesville and Hugh Noland McGirt, and his wife Sheila, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and two grandchildren, Hugh Noland McGirt, II and Katie Marie McGirt.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 12, 2022, at Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crabtree United Methodist Church, 5405 Crabtree Road, Clyde, NC 28721.

The care of Mr. McGirt has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
