"June 10, 1932 ~ May 9, 2018"
Candler - It is with my deepest sadness to let families and friends know that my husband, John K. Jonas, Jr., a United St
ates Air Force veteran, 85, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Caldwell County, he was a son of the late John K. and Mary Ray Jonas. John was a devoted husband to his wife of 23 years, Jeanie Jonas. He was a devoted and dedicated father to his youngest daughter, five year old JK Jonas and son Jonathan Jonas.
John also left behind his other three children, Bryan Jonas, Michelle Jonas and John Jonas, III; his four grandchildren, Luna Isabella, Zachary and Christian Jonas and Charles Andrew Anzalone. He is survived also by one brother, William "Bill" Jonas; and two nephews.
John believed in the Lord with all his heart. He was one of the most three prayerful people I've known in my entire life. John loved spending time with his family and enjoyed very much having a tea party and dancing with JK. He loved spending time with his son, Jonathan. They could talk on the phone for hours.
John was full of humor. He made sure everyone that he encountered went on their day with a smile on their faces. Everyone who knew John, either personal or on a business level, always had a lasting positive impression of him. He was the most genuine, kind and compassionate person that I have ever known.
John had a great passion helping homeless veterans in the Asheville Community. When we found out he had only a few months to live, I asked him, "What would you do if you were given a few more years added to your life?" He responded, "I would love to build more houses for homeless veterans. They need help and it's a regret that only a few landlords in the community willing to take them"
Although he held many positions in his life, aviation became his specialty. He loved flying and had owned several airplanes throughout his lifetime. Flying was like his air to breathe.
During John's last days, he said to me, "It is not about what you have accomplished in your entire lifetime, it is about time spent with your family and the people you leave behind."
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Pole Creek Baptist Church with the Reverend Dennis Thurman officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force and the VFW firing party.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
