"Jody" David Joseph
Rivera
June 13, 1973 – April 23, 2026
David Joseph “Jody” Rivera, age 52, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Mission Hospital. Born on June 13, 1973, in Haywood County, North Carolina, Jody was the beloved son of José Ramón Rivera and the late Norma Jean Kirkland Rivera.
Jody’s life was one of both profound challenge and remarkable grace. Living with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, he faced obstacles from his earliest days that many could scarcely imagine, and yet he faced the world with a smile on his face and with love in his heart. As a child, determined and resourceful, he learned to move about by scooting himself forward with his arms. As time passed and his condition progressed, Jody eventually lost the use of his limbs, becoming physically confined in ways that might have silenced another spirit. But Jody was never defined by limitations. He met each new hardship with quiet resilience, finding new ways to connect, to express himself, and to live fully.
Gifted with a beautiful voice and a deep love for music, Jody found joy and purpose in song. He was the lead singer of the Singing Angels of Franklin and shared his talent faithfully at First Baptist Church of Franklin, where he was a member, and many other churches throughout the area. Music lived within him; it colored his speech with a gentle, melodic lilt and filled his days with meaning. He especially loved classic country music, with a special fondness for George Jones, and had an extraordinary memory for songs, often recalling not only the tune, but the artist, songwriter, and year of release.
Jody’s world was also filled with simple joys. He delighted in watching The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, The Three Stooges, Wheel of Fortune, and The Jetsons. He carried a childlike wonder that brought light and warmth to those around him, paired with a steadfast devotion to routine, faithfully saying his prayers before meals, keeping track of the days of the week, and never forgetting to take his medicine.
Even as his physical abilities diminished, Jody adapted with determination. Using assistive technology, he learned to call out “Hey Google,” maintaining communication and independence in ways that reflected both his ingenuity and his enduring spirit. His life also carried him beyond the familiar; he traveled all throughout the area where his story became a testament to the advances in medical care that allowed him to live well beyond early expectations.
In time, Jody came to reside in group homes, and ultimately in the care of Gene Webb and Gary Penland. Over the 17 years he lived with them, they became far more than caregivers- they became family, offering him love, stability, and the kind of devotion that shaped the final chapter of his life with dignity and belonging.
Jody is survived by his father, José Ramón Rivera of Waynesville; his sisters, Jessica Bell (Glenn) of Bryson City and Maria Rivera of Waynesville; his brother, Josh Pressley (Emily) of Franklin; his devoted caregivers and “special fathers,” Gene Webb and Gary Penland; his beloved cat, Tiger; and many extended family members who will cherish his memory.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in David “Jody” Rivera’s memory to Macon Citizens Habilities (MCH), PO Box 698, Franklin, NC 28744.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Macon Citizens Habilities for their years of compassion, dedication, and unwavering support. Through their care, Jody’s life was not only sustained, but enriched.
Jody’s story is one of perseverance, faith, and joy. Though his body bore great burdens, his spirit remained light, his voice unwavering, and his heart full. He leaves behind a legacy that reminds us all of the strength found in gentleness, the beauty of resilience, and the enduring power of love.
“He is a Singing Angel now…” – Beverly Gaddis
