Jo Anne Chandler Parris, age 76, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2023 surrounded by her family. Born on August 3, 1947, Jo Anne grew up in Waynesville, NC with her parents Fred and Ruth Laney Chandler, her sister, Ila C. Knight (Melburn) and two brothers, Buddy (Melissa) Chandler and Tommy (Darlene) Chandler.

She graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1965 and worked at Barton’s Store during her high school years. She met her future husband, Jerry, on the school bus. They were married on August 24, 1965 and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.

Jo Anne worked 28 years for the United States Postal Service, serving as Postmaster of the Balsam Post Office. She was known as a dedicated worker that developed close friendships with her customers.

The most important aspect of her life was her commitment to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived out her faith and impacted multiple generations. Jo Anne was a faithful member of Balsam Missionary Baptist Church. With a deep knowledge of the Bible, she was an excellent Sunday School teacher. She also served as a choir member and on various church committees.

Jo Anne dedicated her life to serving her family. She loved her kitchen and enjoyed the efforts of making delicious homemade food. She was a fabulous cook and served others by preparing wonderful meals. She will be remembered as a peacemaker, humble, kind, and for her generosity to those in need.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Parris; three sons, Stephen, and his wife Shawn, of Bethel, NC, Scotty of San Diego, CA, and Stan, and his wife Susan, of Boones Mill, Virginia; four grandchildren, Chandler (Dakota) Sharpe of Canton, NC, Cassie (Dalton) King of Johnson City, TN, Briggs Parris of Knoxville, TN, and Glenn Parris of Birmingham, AL; and one great-grandchild, Kenzlo King.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Balsam Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Stan Parris and Pastor Lee Brooks officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Balsam Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the building fund of the Balsam Missionary Baptist Church.

The care of Mrs. Parris has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
