Jewell Elisabeth White Lipham, age 101, passed away on March 19, 2024 at the Silver Bluffs Home. Born and raised in southern Georgia, just outside of Waycross, she was the daughter of the late Louis Roy and Mary Elvira Miller White. In addition to her parents, Jewell was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Woodfin Emmett "Woody" Lipham; an infant son, David Woodfin Lipham; and a brother, Kelsall Roy White .
Jewell graduated valedictorian of Waresboro High School and was the senior class president. With the aid of a 4H work scholarship, she attended two years at Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Georgia and two years at the University of Georgia in Athens, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics in 1943.
While attending the University of Georgia, she met her future husband, Woody, whom she married shortly after he joined the Army during WWII. After the war, Jewell and Woody moved to Canton where they began their family, raising four children. As a mother, she was active in community affairs, including the Home Demonstration Club, 4H, and the PTA, where she also served several years as secretary and as president.
After her children grew older, Jewell returned to teaching, a career she started when she first moved to Canton, before the births of her children. From 1963 to 1967, she taught 7th grade at Canton Junior High. In 1968, she began teaching Home Economics at Canton Junior High until
1976.
Throughout her life, Jewell was an active church member. She lived her life as a Christian reflecting the glory of her lord in her life of service. For more than two decades, she taught a Sunday school class. As a pianist, organist, and choir member, she also participated in the music ministry. She was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church.
Jewell was known for her tireless energy, a 1000 watt smile, and inability to turn down any challenge. Her effect on the lives of her students, children, grandchildren and friends will be felt for generations.
Jewell is survived by one daughter, Jean Oates of Hendersonville; three sons, Dr. Harry G. Lipham (Eileen) of Waynesville, Ray B. Lipham (Linda) of Germantown, Tennessee, and NeaI E. Lipham (Lisa) of Canton; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at Central United Methodist Church of Canton with Reverend Erin Yow officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until 2:30 pm at the church.
