Jessie Roberts

Canton - Jessie Ray Roberts, age 89, of Sorrells Cove Road, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a native of Madison County but had lived most of his life in Haywood County and was a son of the late Dow and Arrie Worley Roberts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Medford Roberts, who died in April, 1998; a brother, Blaine Roberts; three sisters, Emma Cabe, Faye Sams, and Ora Mae Shipman. Jessie retired from Champion International as a rewinder operator and attended Mountain View Church of God. Jessie loved to coon hunt and had a special love for his hound dogs and gardening. He is survived by two daughters, Barbara Nelson and her husband, Earl, of Clyde and Shelbia Kyle Martin of Canton; two sisters, Inis Robinson of Asheville, and Edith Rhodarmer of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Wade Roberts of Asheville and Bob Roberts of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Faith Kyle, Brandon and Eric Nelson; and five great-grandchildren, Melodie Ledford, Erica Nelson, Jenny Ramsey, Ethan and Samantha Nelson. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2007 at Mountain View Church of God with Reverend Herman Toney and Reverend Billy Stockton officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road with full military rites conducted. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Kevin Ledford, Michael Kyle, Howard Sorrells, Danny Cabe, Micky Schumaker, and Kenneth Johnson. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Barbara Nelson, 292 Roberts Mountain Road, Clyde, NC 28721. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SARGE'S Animal Rescue Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 854, Waynesville, NC 28786.
