Jessie Devlin

Canton-Jessie Miller Devlin-87, formerly of 5 Trammell Avenue, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center.

Mrs. Devlin was born in Madison County and was the daughter of William Turner and Susan Joyce Miller. Following her mother's death in 1918, she made her home with her grandfather, Marion Joyce and was cared for by her Aunt Nellie Joyce Welch in Candler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Devlin who passed away September 1972, a daughter, Helen Swartzel, a great-granddaughter, Marci Wintz and a sister, Hilda Goodson.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Marie and husband, Dick Knol of Edmond, Oklahoma and Paula Sue and her husband, Wiley Carroll Price of Asheville, a brother, Ray Miller of Spokane, WA; eight grandchildren, Gerald Knol and his wife, Jane; Cynthia K. Wintz and her husband, Billy; Jessica Price Brown and her husband, Ronnie; Garry Knol and his wife, Brenda; Cathy K. Hicks and her husband, Stan; Stanley Swartzel; Vicki S. Cheadle and her husband, Greg; Johnna P. McNamara and her husband, Steve and eight great-grandchildren. Her only great-grandchild to live in North Carolina, Kelly McNamara, loved to visit her "Gran Devlin."

Mrs. Devlin was a member of First Baptist Church of Canton and formerly worked for Enka Rayon Plant for 8 years, Hudson Dept. Store for 11 years and Canton's YMCA for 20 years.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2002 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with Reverend Jack W. Collins. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Wiley and Paula Price, 1503 Hyde Park Drive, Asheville, NC.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Lottie Moon Trust Fund, Canton First Baptist Church, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC, 28716
