Hendersonville-Jesse Clarence "Pete" Shope-67, of the Dana Community died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 at Park Ridge Hospital.

He was a native of Haywood County and had lived in Henderson County for the past 7 years. He was a son of the late G. H. Shope, Sr. and Bertha Miller Shope and was also preceded in death by a sister, Mable Hooker. He retired from Champion International in 1998 with 39 years of service and was a member of Fletcher United Methodist Church. He was a United States Navy Veteran.

He is survived by his wife of nine years, Cartha C. Shope, three daughters; Kathy Janeiro of Annandale, VA, Robbie Gentry of Hendersonville, NC and Sherri Shope of South Carolina, two step-sons; Jerry C. Barger of Tucson, AZ, and Allan L. Barger of Lexington, KY, three sisters; Hazel Young and Ruth Shope both of Asheville, and Sue Belcher of Leicester, five brothers; Calvin, Robert, James, and Reverend G. H. Shope, Jr., all of Candler, and David Shope of Asheville, 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Fletcher United Methodist Church with Reverend Ed L. Hillman officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Homes of Canton.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Parkinson's Association, C/O Annette Loatsium, 18 Joe Bailey Road, Asheville, NC 28732 or to a charity of one's choice.
