James “Lewis” Swanger, 91, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at Valor Hospice with the VA Medical Center. Born on July 3, 1934, in Haywood, North Carolina, he led a life marked by service, compassion, and a dedication to bettering the lives of others.

Lewis proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, where he was stationed in Korea. His military service earned him numerous accolades, including the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable service, Lewis pursued a business degree from Blanton College and retired from Champion Papers in Canton, NC.

Known for his huge heart and caring nature, Lewis was deeply involved in the local community. He played a significant role in the "Santa Pal's" initiative for Waynesville and surrounding counties, embodying the spirit of generosity and kindness. He frequently provided necessity goodie bags to those less fortunate, reflecting his unwavering commitment to helping others.

Lewis was also a masonry member of the Pigeon River Lodge for many years, and he utilized his woodworking skills to handcraft wooden crosses that he generously gave out within his community. His creative talents extended to writing, and he published poems in books, including one titled "Children."

In addition to his community work, Lewis had a passion for trout fishing in Cherokee, North Carolina, and enjoyed visiting the casino and playing Bingo.

He is survived by sister, Gloria Jenkins (Ed) and Daughter in law Freda Swanger, who is the wife to his late son, Buz; three sons, Darrell Swanger (Dani), Greg Swanger (Lety), and David Swanger (Jessica); and a daughter, Amy Wilde (George). Lewis cherished his family, which includes 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Lewis will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him as a man of strength, love, and generosity. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ocie Trantham Swanger; his brother, Jerry Swanger; his sister, Vickie Swanger; his daughter, Debbie Deal; and his son, Buz Swanger and his loving wife, Rosemary Swanger of 38 years.

The care of James “Lewis” Swanger has been entrusted by the family to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
