Obituary

James “Ray” Pressley, 85, of Candler, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1st, 2026 following a brief battle with cancer. While his family grieves his passing, they find comfort in knowing he has been reunited in Heaven with the love of his life, Mary Jo.

Ray was born to the late Lewis and Hazel Pressley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Jo Pressley, and his son-in-law, Boyd Guthrie. He is survived by his loving daughter, Annette Guthrie; his son, David Pressley (Jill); his grandchildren, David Whitt (Andi), Shelby Harbin (Caleb), and Sheridan Pressley; and his great-grandchildren, Andrew and Madi Whitt, Brooks Harbin, and soon-to-arrive Finley Harbin.

His family was his greatest blessing, and he treasured every moment spent with them. Ray spent most of his working years at American Enka and Champion International Paper. He was a hardworking, dependable man who took great pride in providing for his family. In his spare time, he rarely missed an Atlanta Braves baseball game or a Carolina Tar Heels basketball game, faithfully cheering on his favorite teams through every season. A devoted member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, Ray faithfully served his church and community for many years. He especially enjoyed leading the monthly community breakfast, where good food, fellowship, and faith brought friends together. His quiet faith was reflected not only in his words but in the way he lived each day—always willing to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, and serve others with humility. Ray was also a founding member of Hominy Valley Rec Park, where his dedication and hard work helped create many of the ballfields that continue to serve the community today.

Those who knew Ray will remember his gentle spirit, kind heart, and warm sense of humor. He loved making others smile and often joked that babies and dogs loved him. His faithful grand-dog, Roxy, remained by his side until the very end, bringing him comfort and unconditional love. Above all, Ray was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, faithful Christian, and loyal friend. His legacy of faith, kindness, humility, and love will continue to live on through the lives of those who knew and loved him.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family rejoices in the promise that they will see him again.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill Methodist Church or CarePartners Solace Center in gratitude for the compassionate care and support they provided during Ray's final days.

A Memorial Service will be held on July 8th, 2026 at 3:00pm officiated by Pastor Eric Hill, located at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Family will receive friends from 1:30pm to 3:00pm.

Wells funeral Home of Canton has been entrusted with James Pressley's care.
