James Edward Odum

James Edward Odum, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where he was born on December 28, 1941. He lived a life dedicated to his family, career, and community, leaving behind a legacy of love.

Jim retired as an electrician for Square D, a position that he approached with commitment and skill. His work touched the lives of countless individuals and contributions within his industry. Jim proudly served in the United States Army, an experience that shaped his character and resilience.

A devoted family man, Jim is survived by his loving wife, Doris Morgan Odum; and their children: sons, Allen Crowe of Arden; and Daryl “Yogi” Crowe (Jennifer) of Candler; and daughter, Dana Haney (Jeff) of Candler. His siblings also remember him fondly: sisters, Anne Thomas of Canton, and Mary Myers of Oklahoma; as well as brothers, Terry Sprouse of Asheville and Larry Sprouse of Georgia. Jim's enduring legacy extends to his five grandchildren: Jennifer Luther, Kymberlee Rainwater (Zach), Katelyn Haney, Brad Haney, and Dustin Crowe (Alyissa); and four great-grandchildren: Nevaeh Luther, Xander Luther, Kenzleigh Rainwater, and Scarlett Rainwater. Each of them carries a piece of his spirit in their hearts.

Jim was deeply involved in his church life, proud to serve the families of Reeves Chapel United Methodist and Sardis United Methodist. He was also an active member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist, where he found joy and fulfillment in fostering community and support among its members.

He is preceded in death by his Mother, Lillie Bell Odum; and daughter-in-law, Monica Crowe. Jim's journey was marked by the profound sorrow of losing twin children, Deanna and Donald Odum, along with two brothers who departed before him. Despite the heartache he faced, Jim's strength and optimism remained steadfast throughout his life.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024 at Ridgeway Baptist Church with Reverend Eric Hill and Reverend Phillip Hurst officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:30 until service time at the church.
