Jack Greene

June 12, 1929 — March 31, 2007

Clyde-Jack Kay Greene, age 77, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert Taylor and Glennie Leona Fine Greene. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Hobert, Elmer, Robert and Raymond and three sisters, Georgie, Lucy and Bonnie. Jack retired from Champion International in 1986 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church where he worked many years on the Building and Grounds Committee and Music Committee; he was a very talented musician who enjoyed playing many different musical instruments. He played with the Layman Quartet and traveled extensively with them. He played the bass guitar with the Woodland Church choir for many years; mowed lawns and made repairs in and around the church and parsonage while keeping the grounds clean and attractive with things he planted until his health no longer permitted him to do the work. He was also a very talented woodcarving craftsman. Jack was a quiet man who, having no children of his own, befriended many young people, teaching some to play the bass guitar. As a friend and confidant to these youth, he set a positive Christian example, listened to them and gave sound advice. His and Betty's home was a welcoming place for everyone, not just children and youth. Jack was also a kind, compassionate person who, when seeing a need at church or in his neighborhood, quietly filled the need expecting nothing in return. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty A. Green; a sister, Edna G. Swanger of Clyde and a brother, Hooper Greene of Waynesville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, 2007 in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville with Reverend Alan Davis and Reverend Tim Burnette officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Ed Kelley, Don Allison, Erle Medford, Jason Dowell, Robbie Greene, Kevin Massie, Craig Bishop and Joseph Ippolito. Honorary pallbearers will be men from Woodland Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Woodland Baptist Church New Building Fund, 1400 Old Clyde Road, Clyde, NC 28721 or Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Hospice Building Fund, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
