Obituary

Horace T. Hipps, 84, passed away on October 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Candler, North Carolina, and a longtime resident of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, Horace was born on March 9, 1942, to the late Charles and Blanche Hipps. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Betty, and together they shared more than 60 years of marriage, friendship, and devotion.

A graduate of Enka High School, Horace dedicated much of his professional life to the skilled trade of machining. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he served as a Machinist Supervisor, and later embarked on a second career as a Machinist in the nuclear industry.

Faith and service were important cornerstones of Horace's life. He was a devoted member and former deacon of both Isle of Palms Baptist Church and Sullivan's Island Baptist Church. He was equally committed to his Masonic brethren, serving twice as Past Master of Hammerton Masonic Lodge No. 332 and Fort Moultrie Masonic Lodge No. 428. He was also honored as an honorary member of Biltmore Lodge No. 446.

In addition to his parents, Horace was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Hilliard Hipps.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife and best friend of more than 60 years, Betty Hipps; his sons, Robert Hipps (Theresa) and Mark Hipps (Linda); his four grandchildren, Susannah, Annelise, Isaac, and Landis; his brother, Curtis Hipps (Faye); his sister, Martha Kent; and his nephews, Steven Hipps (Carmen) and Michael Hipps.

A funeral service will be held at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Candler, North Carolina, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Mark Tice officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, where Masonic Graveside Rites will be rendered by Biltmore Lodge No. 446.

Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Candler is honored to serve the Hipps family during this time.
