Hilda Russell

Canton, Hilda Grasty Russell, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Hobert and Maggie Messer Grasty. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Russell, who died in 1995; a sister, Martha Boring; and a brother, James Grasty. Hilda formerly worked at Whitman's Bakery and Howell's Bakery for 21 years. Hilda was blessed for 83 years to be surrounded by loving family and friends. She enjoyed walking the track at the Waynesville Recreation Center, tending to her flowers and babysitting her favorite "granddog," Marley. Hilda was an active and faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church. Hilda is survived by a daughter, Brenda James, of Canton; a son, Phillip Russell (Linda), of Canton; four sisters, Mary Jo Grasty and Sarah Ledford of Canton and Frances Clark and Effie Donaldson (Wayne) of Waynesville; brothers, Fred Grasty (June) of Waynesville and Billy Grasty (Joann) of Richmond, Virginia; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Drew Russell. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday prior to services at the funeral home.
