Waynesville

Hilda Moody Leatherwood, 102, of Waynesville passed away Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at the Spicewood Cottages in Clyde.  She was born August 3, 1920, to Leslie and Myrtle Ashe Moody.

Hilda was a native of Haywood County.  She was retired from Haywood County Schools as a bookkeeper in the payroll department at Central Office.  Hilda also proudly served her country in the US Navy during WWII as a Yeoman Second Class.  She was stationed in Washington D.C. where she served in the Casualty Department.

Hilda was a lifelong member of Maple Grove United Methodist, where she served as Treasurer for many years.  Hilda and her husband, Leonard sang in the choir.  She believed that music was an important part of the worship service.

She enjoyed her family and spending time with them. She particularly loved visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hilda was an avid reader and considered herself a life-long learner.  She enjoyed watching Jeopardy, working both crossword and Sudukos puzzles, and reading historical novels.

Along with her parents, Hilda is preceded in death by her husband of sixty-five years, Leonard Lee Leatherwood who passed away in 2006; her son USAF Lt. Col. (Ret) Alan Leatherwood; three brothers, Leslie Moody, Jr, Jim and Gene Moody; and one sister, Mohela Medford.

Hilda is survived by her son, Terry Leatherwood, and his wife, Eileen, of Waynesville; a sister Joyce Robe, of Franklin; daughter-in-law, Dr. Darlene Leatherwood, of Waynesville; grandchildren, Jeni Glasgow (Dr. Sean), USAF Lt. Col. (Ret) Jon Leatherwood (Tera); five great-grandchildren, Douglas, Megan, Kaitlyn Glasgow, Cooper and Everly Leatherwood; several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Sheila Moody.
