Herbert Ray Roberson, III, affectionately known as Herb or Gator, passed away on June 2, 2025, at Mission Hospital in Buncombe County, North Carolina.

Born on April 20, 1953, Herb spent his early years in Buncombe County. Herb was a graduate of Enka High School Class of 1971; he proudly played the trumpet all four years in the marching band. He would later forge a distinguished career as a firefighter. His journey began at the Biltmore Forest Fire Department and culminated with his retirement from the Asheville City Fire Department, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication and courage.

Herb was a man of many passions. Known for his animated personality, he brought joy to those around him. He had a deep love for collecting fire department memorabilia and classic trains, which reflected both his respect for history and his continuous quest for knowledge. As a committed educator, he taught at several local community colleges, inspiring and guiding the next generation of firefighters. His colleagues often referred to him as the "rope-master," a testament to his expertise and leadership within the firefighting community.

Beyond his professional life, Herb was a wonderful cook, known for sharing delicious meals with friends and family, including his Liberty Baptist Church family, where he and his late wife Jan were members.

Herb's family was the center of his universe. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Amanda Roberson Hannah, and her husband, Shane Hannah. His grandchildren—Kynley Ray, Keri Hannah, Myles Hannah, Zayne and Soyeur Menser, Brodie and Fable Barker, and Olive Russell—were a source of immense pride and joy for him. Additionally, cherished special family members Tammy, Megan Russell, and Crystal Menser.

Herb was reunited in Heaven with his wife, Janice "Jan" Echerd Roberson; his parents, Herbert Ray Roberson Jr. and Julia Roberson; and his daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Lynn Roberson. Each of these lost loved ones held a special place in his heart, and their memories continue to echo into the lives of those who knew and loved him.

As we remember Herbert Ray Roberson, III, we celebrate not only his remarkable achievements but also the profound love he had for his family and his unwavering commitment to his community. His legacy will be carried forth by those he touched and inspired throughout his life.
