Helen Stamey

Canton – Helen Johnson Stamey, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Helen was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood and was a daughter of the late Eugene and Dorothy Sisk Johnson.  Helen worked for many years at First Union Bank in Canton and was previously a member of Calvary Baptist Church.  The first movie Helen and George watched together was “The Dirty Dozen” and they it a ritual to watch it again on their anniversary.  Helen was a family-oriented woman, enjoyed gatherings, loved keeping pets, especially small dogs.  She was also a wonderful cook.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, George Stamey; a son, John Meredith Stamey of Canton; and a long-term friend from college, Celia Miles.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.  A private burial will be held.

The care of Mrs. Stamey has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
