Harold Leo Mathews, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, at Haywood Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 1, 1945, Harold was a man whose life was marked by his dedication to his family and his commitment to hard work.
For 29 years, Harold was employed at DayCo where he worked as a production manager, making significant contributions to his field. His professional journey also included roles at Valley Rich Dairy and Haywood HVO, where his diligence and skill were well recognized. Beyond his career, he was a devoted member of West Canton Baptist Church, where he found strength and community.
Harold was the true southern gentleman, known not only for his hard work but also for his kind, thoughtful nature. He was a wonderful provider and protector, embodying the virtues of love and support that defined his relationships. His legacy of love endures in the hearts of those he leaves behind, including his cherished wife of 31 years, Sandra Hipps Mathews, and his three daughters, who were the prides of his life, Traci, Holly, and Carrie Mathews, all of Asheville. His sister, Clydean "Sissy" Jetton (Glen) of Kennewick, WA, and brother, Robert Mathews (Rhonda) of Hendersonville, carry forward his spirit alongside his nephews, Jeff, Pearson, and David, and nieces, Kelly, Kimberly, and Tiffany. Harold also treasured the companionship of his lifelong friend, Gordon Buchanan, and his beloved dog Lacey, who often joined him in the garden.
Harold was an avid gardener, a true nurturer of life, able to grow anything with his special touch. His genuine interest in fixing and building things earned him the nickname "MacGyver," highlighting his resourcefulness and creativity. An exceptional cook, he delighted in preparing fresh vegetables from his garden, sharing meals filled with love. Harold had a deep appreciation for music, spending joyful hours watching cooking and music shows, particularly Austin City Limits, and passing on his love of nature to his daughters.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Leo Harvey Mathews and Eula Mae Greene Mathews, and his brother, Ray Mathews. Harold's legacy is a tapestry woven with the love and memories shared with his family. He will be deeply missed, but his kindness, laughter, and gentle spirit will forever resonate among all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation for Harold will be held on June 6, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM, followed by a funeral service at the Wells Funeral Home located at 3715 Asheville Highway in Canton, NC, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
