Harold Long

Waynesville, Harold Dean Long, 83, passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A native of Clay County, he was the son of the late Robert and Emaline Smart Long and was also preceded in death by ten siblings. He was a US Army veteran having served in the Far Eastern Command Honor Guard. Harold was employed by the Dayco Corporation for 36 years and served as Union President. Later, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill and received a certificate in county administration. He served as chairman of the Haywood County Board of Commissioners and was Campaign Manager for the Democratic Party for several candidates. He also served on the board and was a former Chairman at Haywood Community College Board of Trustees and was responsible for several projects on the campus. He was the driving force for the building of the Haywood County Hospital and was Chairman of the Board for Junaluska Fire Department. He was a member of the Waynesville Masonic Lodge No. 259, was an Oasis Shriner and a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville. Harold was an avid woodworker and enjoyed rockhounding and making jewelry.

Harold is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean H. Long; a daughter, Cammy Woodbery of Waynesville; a son, Jody Long (Tracy) of Clyde; a sister, Carolyn Bowers, of Clay County; three grandchildren, Wesley Woodbery (Cindy) and Lyndsey and Cody Long; and one great-grandson, Carter Woodbery.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville with Masonic Rites conducted at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with Reverend Dr. T. David Phillips officiating.
