Harold Childers

October 4, 1926 — September 1, 2018

Canton - Harold "Hoss" Childers, age 91, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018 following a brief illness.

Mr. Childers was born in Canton and was the son of the late Joe and Connie Penland Childers. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Jo Harris, Rubena Silvers, and Martha Styles; and three brothers, Raymond, Frank, and Ralph Childers. He was a United States WWII Navy veteran and retired after 42 years of service at Champion International Paper. Harold was a proud member of Sunny Point Baptist Church and also a member of Pisgah Camping Club where he enjoyed the many friendships he had made there. Harold always enjoyed his family, gardening and his cars.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Felma Smith Childers; his daughter, Sheila Wooten and her husband, Garry; the light of his life his granddaughter, Heather Wooten, of Charlotte, NC and her fiancé Scott Vogelbacker which was Harold's favorite newfound shipmate.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Ricky Mason officiating. Burial will follow at Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunny Point Baptist Church, 132 Sunny Point Drive, Canton, NC 28716.
